5.1.8 - Order of Adjective

In many languages, adjectives denoting attributes usually occur in a specific order. Generally, the adjective order in English is:

  • Quantity or number
  • Quality or opinion
  • Size
  • Age
  • Shape
  • Color
  • Proper adjective (often nationality, other place of origin, or material)
  • Purpose or qualifier

Arrange the following into a sentence according to the order of the adjectives

  1. (i) a green silk sari
    (ii) a grey old tin box

  2. (i) a black crooked crow
    (ii) sat on the blue marble statue.

  3. (i) a strange white parrot
    (ii) the dark blue sky

  4. (i) The little mango tree
    (ii) was cut by the big iron saw.

  5. (i) a tiny yellow bird
    (ii) sang a big magical song.
