Book Back Questions

1. Write on the appropriateness of the title “The Death Trap”.

The title “The Death Trap” is very appropriate to the play. Prince Dimitri is trapped by his own guards who plan to murder him with the support of Prince Karl. His helpless position as the last heir of the dynasty and his lack of power become a death trap for him. At the same time, the disloyal guards—Girnitza, Vontieff, and Shultz—also fall into a death trap because of their treachery. Though they plan to kill the Prince, they are finally killed by the poisoned wine. Thus, what was meant to destroy the Prince ends up destroying his enemies. The title reflects how helplessness becomes a trap for the Prince and disloyalty becomes a trap for the guards. Hence, the title perfectly suits the theme of the play.

2. Describe how Prince Dimitri turned the tables on his disloyal guards.

Prince Dimitri knows that his guards are planning to murder him. With the help of his loyal physician Dr. Stronetz, he temporarily delays the murder through a fake physical examination. Later, he discovers that he is suffering from an incurable disease and decides to take revenge before dying. Prince Dimitri prepares a jug of wine mixed with poison. He invites the disloyal guards—Girnitza, Vontieff, and Shultz—for a final drink. He drinks the poisoned wine himself and offers the same wine to them. Trusting him, they drink it and die. In this way, the Prince cleverly turns the murder plot against his enemies. Though he cannot escape death, he defeats his enemies with intelligence and courage.

3. Analyze the character of Dr. Stronetz.

Dr. Stronetz is the loyal and devoted physician of Prince Dimitri. He is kind-hearted and deeply concerned about the Prince’s safety. When he realizes that the guards are plotting to kill the Prince, he acts quickly and intelligently. He pretends to conduct a physical examination to delay the murder plan. This shows his presence of mind and loyalty. Dr. Stronetz also reveals the painful truth that the Prince is suffering from an incurable disease. Though this shocks the Prince, Dr. Stronetz does not hide the truth. He stands by the Prince till the end. His actions show honesty, courage, intelligence, and deep loyalty. Thus, Dr. Stronetz plays a crucial role in the play.

4. Bring out the major themes in the play “The Death Trap”.

The play “The Death Trap” presents several important themes. One major theme is disloyalty, shown through the guards who betray their own Prince for political power. Another theme is helplessness, as Prince Dimitri comes to power at a young age and lacks real authority. Revenge is also a key theme, as the Prince punishes his enemies before his death. The play also highlights intelligence over force, where the Prince defeats stronger enemies using clever planning. Fate and destiny play an important role, as the Prince cannot escape death due to illness. Thus, the play shows how betrayal leads to destruction and intelligence helps one face even unavoidable death.

5. Sketch the character of Prince Dimitri.

Prince Dimitri is the tragic hero of the play. He becomes king at a very young age without experience in governance. This makes him weak and helpless in the eyes of his enemies. However, he is intelligent and courageous. He is aware of the murder plot against him and knows the exact time of his death. Even after learning about his incurable disease, he does not lose courage. Instead, he plans to punish his disloyal guards. His final act of drinking poisoned wine shows bravery and determination. Though he cannot save his life, he protects his dignity and honor. Thus, Prince Dimitri is helpless yet intelligent, brave, and dignified.
